چکیده

Solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for fluid flow using a semi-lagrangian method is a two step process [3]. In this paper we focus on the second step which involves the solution of a large sparse symmetric indefinite linear system of equations. Numerous numerical methods were used to solve this system. Here, the computation requirements of several are compared in hopes of finding an optimal method for the particular problem.

Analysis of a sequential regularization method for the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations

The incompressibility constraint makes Navier-Stokes equations difficult. A reformulation to a better posed problem is needed before solving it numerically. The sequential regularization method (SRM) is a reformulation which combines the penalty method with a stabilization method in the context of constrained dynamical systems and has the benefit of both methods. In the paper, we study the exis...

A comparative study between two numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations

The present study aimed to investigate two numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. For this purpose, the mentioned flow equations were written in two different formulations, namely (i) velocity-pressure and (ii) vorticity-stream function formulations. Solution algorithms and boundary conditions were presented for both formulations and the efficiency of each formulation was investiga...

Multigrid and Krylov Subspace Methods for the Discrete Stokes Equations

Discretization of the Stokes equations produces a symmetric indefinite system of linear equations. For stable discretizatiom a variety of numerical methods have been proposed that have rates of convergence independent of the mesh size used in the dkretization. In this paper we compare the performance of four such methods, namely variants of the Uzawa, preconditioned conjugate gradient, precondi...

Preconditioning Techniques for Newton’s Method for the Incompressible Navier-stokes Equations

Newton’s method for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in IRd gives rise to large sparse non-symmetric indefinite matrices with the general block form ( F B 1 B2 C ) (1) where F has (d × d) blocks and is non-symmetric and in general indefinite. In this work we investigate the performance of two preconditioning techniques introduced for the Picard method for which both proved significant...

Axi-symmetric Stagnation–Point Flow and Heat Transfer Obliquely Impinging on a Rotating Circular Cylinder

Laminar stagnation flow, axi-symmetrically yet obliquely impinging on a rotating circular cylinder, as well as its heat transfer is formulated as an exact solution of the Navier-Stokes equations. Rotational velocity of the cylinder is time-dependent while the surface transpiration is uniform and steady. The impinging stream is composed of a rotational axial flow superposed onto irrotational rad...
